intersection between Graphic designand object design

As a graphic designer for over 30 years, the idea of creating a “slice” piece of furniture sparked in me a mixture of excitement and curiosity. I’ve always been interested in the intersection between graphic design and object design, and this idea seemed like a perfect fusion of the two fields.

Over time, I refined my concept of “slice” furniture. I wanted to create something modern, minimalist and functional. I started by drawing detailed sketches and plans, taking into account the necessary dimensions, materials and construction techniques.

The road to making this idea a reality was long and full of challenges. Although I have extensive experience in graphic design, working on a piece of furniture meant learning new skills and understanding the principles of construction and assembly.

Once my plans were ready, I went to the FabLab Onl’fait , where I could put my ideas into practice. Thanks to the training I had received on the CNC machine, I was able to manipulate the computer-aided design software and program the machine to make precise cuts.

The CNC machine made it possible to cut the wood with extreme precision, following the exact dimensions of my plans. I was impressed by the speed and precision of the machine, which gave me even more confidence in my project.

My favorite materials

Working with specific materials like MDF orDibond

MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) and Dibond offer interesting artistic possibilities in terms of sculpture and art in general. Here’s how I used them:

Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) is a commonly used material in different arts and crafts fields due to its versatility and unique characteristics.

  • MDF is a versatile material that can be cut, carved and shaped relatively easily. I can sculpt it in two (or three) dimensions to create various artistic shapes.
  • MDF has a smooth surface that is ideal for painting or varnishing.
  • Cutting shapes from MDF sheets and assembling them allows you to create relief compositions or layered montages.

Art and Dibond:

Dibond (or Alucobond), also known as aluminum composite, is an aluminum composite material often used in artistic and architectural applications due to its light weight, durability and versatility.

  • It is light, durable and provides a smooth, flat surface.
  • It is very resistant to bad weather.
  • Its smooth surface is ideal for creating clean, modern works.
  • Dibond can be cut and shaped easily to create three-dimensional works by layering.
Personalize the artworks

It is common and practical in the world of contemporary and digital art to be able to modify the size and colors of a work according to individual preferences

This flexibility allows art lovers and clients to customize works to fit their personal aesthetic, space, and specific needs.

However, it is important to note that each artist may have their own policies regarding modifications of works. Some works might be designed for a specific size and color palette to respect the original artistic intention. It is recommended to speak directly with the artist to understand what customization options are available for a particular work.

Here’s how it works:

Changing the size

I can usually adjust the dimensions of the artwork to make it the desired size.

I could discuss dimension options with you and tailor the piece accordingly.

Changing colors

It is relatively easy to change the colors of an artwork.

Colors can be adjusted according to your preferences. This may involve repainting or re-creating an existing work.

Artwork on demand

An artistic creation specifically created in response to your preferences.

I can create work that perfectly matches your needs and wishes. This involves close collaboration between You and Me.
